What drives MOQ up or down
- Customization level — a standard catalogue product typically has a lower MOQ than a custom glaze colour or fully custom shape.
- Tooling requirement — if a custom mould or tooling is needed, MOQ tends to be higher to justify the setup cost.
- Production batch efficiency — kiln firing and glazing are usually run in batches, which factors into minimum viable order sizes.
If your target volume is below typical MOQ
It's still worth asking. Sometimes a lower volume is achievable at a different price point, or by combining your order with other catalogue products in a single shipment (consolidation), or by starting with a standard shape rather than a custom one to avoid tooling costs.
MOQ and sampling
A sample order is typically separate from your bulk MOQ — it's a small quantity produced to confirm specification before you commit to the full order. Sample cost and availability vary by product and are confirmed with your quotation.
The honest answer
Any supplier who quotes a single fixed MOQ for every product and every customization level either hasn't thought it through or isn't being precise. The accurate answer is always: share the product, the customization, and your target volume, and MOQ gets confirmed against that specific combination.
